I lived in France as an exchange student, and my host mother was exactly like Madame Chic, as were many of my friends' host mothers. They did not seem at all conflicted about "having it all", and I admired their ease in their roles as housewives. However, I feel compelled to point out that the "French" model is not in reality what one may want to import. Yes, we ate a three course meal every night, together, with the table set as described in the book. But here's the rub: two or three nights a week, this dinner was not ready until 9 or 10 pm. Also, my French mom was constantly up and down from the table, getting those three courses served. Without an employee, it is not physically possible to serve a three course meal without someone getting up and down to warm and fetch those courses!! This book would have us aspiring to serve three course dinners every night, while never getting up from the table. Just not possible! The French don't snack? The kids did snack. They would wolf down croissants with chocolate spread every day at about 5:30 because, well, they might not be able to eat dinner until 10. It wasn't just like this in my family; it was in everyone else's host family too. Like Madame Chic, my host mother looked impeccable, always. She wore gold earrings, low-heeled pumps, a white buttoned shirt, and a blue linen skirt and jacket set, or her green linen set. I never saw her in anything else for the entire three months I lived there. Shame on the 10 item wardrobe -- how about 5? ;) At first I thought this book was silly, but then I was won over by Ms. Scott's honesty of how it can feel being a stay-at-home Mom of young children. For this, it was worth the read. But seriously. Even if you could run your household like Madame, would you really want to? Just take the author's advice if you are a stay-at-home-Mom: Embrace it. Model the behavior you want to see in your kids. Be organized, but don't try to control everything. Take everything else with a grain of salt.
